MULTI INTELLIGENCE AND ITS BENEFITS TO STUDENTS
course

INTRODUCTION:

Multi intelligence is a theory proposed by a development psychologist at Harvard University

named Howard Gardner in 1983. According to this theory, human intelligence can be

divided into eight modalities. They are:  • Visual-spatial • Verbal-linguistic • Musical-rhythmic • Logical-mathematical • Interpersonal • Intrapersonal • Naturalistic • Body-kinesthetic

Multi intelligence is a theory about the different ways students learn, understand interpret

information. This can include the use of words, pictures, understanding numbers,

responding to music, social-interactions, introspection, and intervene with nature. The main

thing about multi-intelligence is that the teacher can adjust the learning and teaching style

based on the type of intelligence of the students. It also helps to determine the IQ of the

students. People not only have the intellectual capacity, but they have much other

intelligence too. Finding that intelligence and improving will help to be more successful. It is

the use of the bits of intelligence or skills you possess which you do not know yet, that you

are smart at.

BENEFITS OF MULTI INTELLIGENCE:

Everyone is not the same. Different people will find the interest and they will excel in

different things. Understanding multi-intelligence will help the students to know what they

are good at. Some benefits are: • Students will develop more confidence if they are excelling in a particular field of

interest. Even though they may not good at certain things that traditionally valued

most in schools, they will not be disappointed when they are winning in something.

• If the classrooms are made based on multi-intelligence it will become more vibrant

and interesting to the students. It will help the students to become active learners

and also help in character development. • Students will be able to understand themselves more. They will explore themselves

and their interests. It will make the students speak up about their ways of learning

cogently. • It will help the students to understand how to learn and to adapt the content to the

learning. By following the different styles of learning the students can grasp the

content easily. • It will help students that have learning disabilities. Understanding multi-intelligence

will help the student to overcome the problem. • When the students are allowed to study in their way they will not lose interest and

will be committed to the study. They will feel motivated and enthusiastic. • It helps in self-development and formation. It will help both students and teachers to

understand their abilities. It will help them to know the weakness and to improve

them. • Understanding and improving the intelligence the student possess will help their

brain development. It will provide more concentration power, memory capacity,

comprehensive and interpretation ability, more attention to students. • It will help the student to love studying more. It can generate interest in them since

they are learning in their way. There won’t be any pressure on students so that they

can be more successful. • It gives the students a different perspective on problem-solving. It interconnects the

hobby of studying which make the student achieve more.

Importance of Extracurricular Activities in Student's Life
course

Importance of Extracurricular Activities in Student's Life

The importance of extra-curricular activities in your child’s school life has always been a topic of argument. Activities that fall outside the scope of your child’s education are considered extra-curricular activities. These activities require a regular time commitment like being in a sports team, learning a musical instrument, drawing, painting, etc.

Extra-curricular activities are a vital element in the holistic development of your child. These activities help students learn about themselves and develop various skills that they can use in different contexts in their life.

Benefits of Extracurricular Activities

Here are a few reasons why Extracurricular activities can benefit your child’s overall growth:

1. Improve Academic Performance

Many parents worry that if the child participates in extracurricular activities, it can hurt the child’s academic performance. But the truth is, these activities can help improve your child’s grades. Good performance in academics requires memory, problem-solving skills, critical thinking, time management, and creativity. Extracurricular activities can help impart these skills in your child, helping him/her perform better in academics.

A study by Texas A&M University shows that academic outcomes like course grades, math achievements, and reading ability were positively influenced by the children who participated in extracurricular activities.

2. Impart Essential Life Skills

The most important benefit of extracurricular activities is that it helps your child in honing real-world skills like teamwork, prioritization, leadership, analytical thinking, time management, problem-solving, public speaking, social, and goal-setting skills. Each skill your child develops through extracurricular activities will help him/her throughout his life.

3. Provide Social Opportunities

These activities don’t only impart life skills but are also helpful in providing your child the opportunity to spend time with other children with similar interests. Your child can meet other children from different social groups through these activities and build strong social skills. Extracurricular activities are a great opportunity for your child to meet new friends and become more confident.

4. Develop New Interests

When your child participates in various activities, he or she can explore different interests and develop passion you never knew he/she had. These activities provide a chance for your child to broaden his/her perspective of the world. Extracurricular activities allow your child to pursue interests outside of the context of their academics.

5. Provide Sense of Commitment

When your child participates in extracurricular activities, he/she learns how to commit to an activity they get involved in. These activities are important in the life of the child. By committing to an activity for the long term, your child will develop a sense of commitment in their life and will commit to other activities including academics.

6. Provide Productive Breaks

Extracurricular activities provide your child the time for fun apart from school. These activities can provide a break from tiring studies and homework. Depending on the interest of your child, these activities can provide the opportunity for him/her to get outside and meet friends, pursue the hobby, or refresh the mind.

If you as a parent think extracurricular activities can impact the child’s overall academic development, you need to take time to think about these activities to maximize the holistic development of the child. The lessons and skills your child will learn from these activities will help them throughout life.

15 STRATEGIES FOR ONLINE TUTORS TO BE PRODUCTIVE IN ONLINE CLASSES
course

In the current pandemic scenario, everything is limited to the home. In the past studying means the physical presence and interaction of students and teachers. But now it is through computers. This unavailability of physical interaction can be considered as a loss. But technologies like the internet and computers are helping to overcome that in a big way. For teachers, it can become an issue since some of the things cannot be conveyed online because of problems like network issues, lack of technological knowledge, etc.

TIPS FOR TUTORS TO BE PRODUCTIVE IN ONLINE CLASS:

  1. Set the perfect goal:

Set the goal by thinking about the tool to make teaching easier, create notes like slideshows, set the topic to be completed in a day, etc.

  1. Plan makes everything perfect:

Before starting the teaching plan the notes, questions, how to interact, the best software for teaching, presentations, quizzes, know about the software you are using, etc.

  1. Connect with students:

The shift from classrooms to online classrooms requires strong connections with students. Establish your presence not just by online class but by online quizzes, assignments, and other activities.

  1. Grab the things you want:

Make sure you have all the materials and things like notes, earphones, pen, etc you needed for the class near you. Avoid opening unnecessary tabs in the browser. This can help to save time and keep the students in interest.

  1. Use good software:

Make sure to use meeting software that has good audio and video quality. Otherwise, the communication between the teacher and students may not be clear. It will be a distraction for the teacher too.

  1. Remember to be slow and clear:

Always try to teach slowly and clearly. Some of the students may have network issues so be open and available for clarifications and to repeat the class if the students wanted to.

  1. Take a break:

Do not just continuously teach. Make a pause for doubt discussions and you can invite the interaction of the students by asking questions in between the class. This will make the students more attentive.

  1. Silence is the key:

Always try to take the class in a silent environment. If you are sitting in a noisy place the students may not be able to hear clearly what you are saying. And try to sit in a place that has good lighting so that the face can be visible to the students. This will help to grab their attention.

  1. Motivate the students:

The change in learning patterns can become a problem to the students. Understand their situation and try to motivate them. Give deadlines to the works and give more points in the discussion. This will help to get the most out of the class.

  1. Teach yourself first:

Acquire knowledge about the technologies first like how to on and off the video and audio, how to share screen, how to add questions, how to adjust the settings, etc. This will help to save time.

  1. Allow criticism:

Get feedback. This will help to improve teaching. Try to communicate with the students and even parents.

  1. Grab the center of attention:

Try to make sure everyone can attend the class and respond to the class. If not suggest any alternate solution to their problem.

  1. Use an alternative teaching method:

Try to use methods like presentations, providing suitable links, articles, pdf files, etc to the students. This will help them to follow the lessons easily.

  1. Make a pause:

Give time for the students to take notes in between the class. This will help them to be more attentive and to easily understand.

  1. Give works:

Assign the students to do more research related to the lessons. This will help them to read more and to gain interest in the subject. It can also help the teacher.

Benefits of Yoga and Meditation for Kids
course

The physical and mental benefits of Yoga and meditation are well recognized across the world.Yoga encourageshealth and wellbeing through practices of different postures, movement, relaxation, meditation, and breathing exercises. It can build emotional, physical, and mental strength, and the benefits are not limited only to adults. Research has revealed that yoga and meditation can be highly beneficial for children of every age. For example, Children with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who practice yoga and meditation regularly can experience better concentration and reduced hyperactive outbursts.

Practicing Yoga and meditation is beneficial for kids for the same reasons as it is for adults. Yoga can help kids to relax, get better sleep, improve concentration, relieve stress and anxiety, and improve mood, empathy, and emotional regulation. It also helps in teaching them to become more mindful.

As adults, stress is something we learned about gradually and adapted to with ages. It has been a regular part of our life. However, for kids, it is something they will be learning about and they don’t know what it is and how to deal with it. They need to learn appropriate and effective tools to manage the stress and emotions. Yoga can be one of the simplest toolsthat kids can learn and benefit from. Here are some benefits of Yoga and meditation for kids:

·         Improves Cognitive Functioning and Memory

Practicing yoga regularly can help in improving cognitive functioning and memory as it helps in creating the focus within. Yoga and meditation practices require a concentration of mind and body simultaneously. One needs to pay attention to the body movements and how the breathing coordinates with the movements of the body.  Some yoga poses require more concentration than others. When the kids practice yoga and meditation, they practice the ability to focus on the task at hand. This will help them improve their focus, memory, and cognitive functioning, resulting in improved academic achievement.

·         Improves Breath Control and Strength

Practicing yoga needs physical and mental strength. When kids practice yoga regularly, many cognitive and physical changes can be observed including better upper body strength, and flexibility, along with mental clarity. All of this strength relates to breathing. When a person breathes quickly or harshly, it can reduce focus, increase muscle tension, and intensifies fight or flight response. All these can have an adverse effect on the mind and the body.

Teaching techniques for breathing properly, and building mental and physical strength at a young age can help reduce the chances of depression, anxiety, and obesity while enhancing self-confidence and self-esteem, helping develop overall well-being.

·         Improves Perseverance and Determination

Yoga can be a fun activity for kids of any age, providing them a non-competitive environment where they can learn new breathing techniques and yoga poses. When it is fun, kids want to learn it more. It is a great feeling to master a thing that one thinks hard to do. For example, some of the poses in yoga can be quite difficult. When the kids learn to practice such poses and regularly do it, they get excited and want to show others what they have learned. This perseverance and determination can result in a feeling of excitement. This feeling encourages kids to do anything they want, even if it is difficult. They carry this feeling to other areas of their life too, like academics, sports, etc.

·         Improves Self-Regulation

Self-regulation is the ability to analyze and change the thought, emotions, and behavior according to the situation. This can help kids solve problems and adjust to new situations and challenges in life, helping them set and achieve goals. By paying attention to the mind and the body, one look inward to understand the thoughts and feelings. Regularly practicing yoga and meditation can help kids understand and manage emotions, feelings, and thoughts according to the situation.

All these benefits of yoga and meditation for kids make it clear that it is an important tool for a kid’s mental, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. Practicing yoga can help kids unwind and release stress. Kids who practice yoga regularly tell their teachers and parents that they can focus better on their day-to-day activities, and pay attention to the task at hand.

Chess Skills Mapping with Multiple Intelligence

We know that playing chess can exercise our minds. Chess is a brain game that enhances patience, perseverance, and concentration while developing memory, creativity, and intuition. It also helps improve the ability to process information easily, solve complex problems, and make tough decisions. While Playing chess cannot help improve your physical strength like other games, but it can benefit your mental health.

With so many benefits of playing chess on your child’s mental health, it is never too late for your child to learn how to play chess. Moreover, many schools nowadays are including chess in daily learning to help students improve their IQ and develop critical thinking. Chess players also exhibit higher cognitive skills compared to non-chess players. The skills required to play chess correlate with several measures of intelligence such as memory, processing speed, spatial intelligence, fluid reasoning, and logical-mathematical intelligence. Hence, learning how to play chess can enhance multiple intelligence.

The Theory of Multiple Intelligence

The theory of Multiple Intelligence was outlined by Dr.Howard Gardner in his book named Frames of Mind: The theory of Multiple Intelligence. In this book, Gardner suggested that everyone has different kinds of intelligence. He also proposed that there are eight types of intelligence:

1.      Linguistic Intelligence

2.      Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

3.      Visual and Spatial Intelligence

4.      Musical Intelligence

5.      Interpersonal Intelligence

6.      Intrapersonal Intelligence

7.      Naturalist Intelligence

8.      Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

In his book, Gardener stated that our culture and schools mostly focus on logic-mathematical and linguistic intelligence. While our culture respects people with logical people, Dr. Howard suggests that people with other types of intelligence like musicians, naturalists, artists, designers, dancers, architects and more should also get equal attention in the society.

Apart from these eight forms of intelligence, another type of intelligence suggested by Dr.Gardner is existential intelligence. It is the sensitivity and ability of an individual to tackle deep questions about the existence of humans, such as What is the real meaning and purpose of life? Why does everyone have to die? How and why did we get here?

How can Chess Skills Improve Multiple Intelligence?

Dr. Howard Gardener suggested in his book that skills required to play chess are drawn from visual-spatial intelligence and logical-mathematical intelligence. Moreover, when a child learns to play chess, his spatial intelligence along with logical-mathematical improves.

Chess can also help develop other types of intelligence such as interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence, and existential intelligence. Here is how playing chess can improve these types of intelligence:

·         Logical-Mathematical Intelligence: Chess makes you think about every move before you make it,along with its consequences in the short and long term during the game. This will help you analyze your every action. This will help you enhance critical thinking and logical reasoning abilities. Learning how to play chess can also help you improve mathematical intelligence.

·         Visual-Spatial Intelligence:When you play chess, you are planning your future moves ahead of time. In order to do this, you need to visualize the changing composition of the chess board for a few moves ahead without even touching a single piece. This would require great visual and spatial intelligence. Playing chess can help you improve this skill and also improve your creativity.

·         Interpersonal Intelligence:Interpersonal intelligence is the ability to effectively understand and communicate with others. Chess can help you better understand the strength and weaknesses of your companions and opponents.

·         Intrapersonal Intelligence: It is the ability of an individual to understand oneself. It is an important intelligence to understand one’s feelings and thoughts and to use this knowledge to plan and direct one’s life. Learning to play chess can help improve the capability to reflect, control emotionality and instinct. Chess can stimulate decision-making, self-confidence, and a sense of responsibility.

·         Bodily-Kinaesthetic Intelligence: it is the ability of an individual to use the whole body in expressing feelings and ideas. The skill is the ability to control bodily movements and skillfully handle various objects. Playing chess can help enhance spatial orientation and Kinesthetic intelligence.
